"Higher education in the United States faces its moment of greatest challenge in living memory," Julio Frenk said Thursday to more than 1,300 guests gathered at Royce Hall as he was inaugurated as UCLA's seventh chancellor during a ceremony replete with professors in academic robes and regalia. "We must meet the moment with courage, resilience and wisdom."
"My job has been to synthesize, and I have synthesized all of that in three big aspirations for UCLA in its second century. That is for UCLA to be connective, to be impactful and to be exemplary," Frenk told Times reporter Jaweed Kaleem.
Ahead of his Thursday inauguration, UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk spoke with National News and Higher Education editor Alexandra Crosnoe and News editor Dylan Winward to discuss his experience in higher education and tenure to date.
Dr. Frenk was inaugurated as the university's first Latino chancellor. Frenk took the job in January after former Chancellor Gene Block stepped down last July.
