On the Right Track: Bowie State Helps Drive New Transit Project

Bowie State University is at the center of a state initiative that will help shape the future of transportation, community and economic growth in Prince George's County. The university recently joined the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and local leaders to celebrate the launch of a new transit-oriented development initiative at the Bowie State MARC Station, a project that reflects Bowie State's commitment to access, sustainability and regional innovation.

President Aminta H. Breaux was joined by state and county officials including Delegate Kym Taylor as well as representatives from the Office of the County Executive, the County Revenue Authority and the Coalition for Smarter Growth. Bowie legislative representatives in attendance included District 23 Delegates Kym Taylor and Adrian Boafo, Maryland State Senator Ron Watson and County Council Member Ingrid Watson. Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development's Asst. Secretary of Policy Scott Gottbreht also supported the event. Together they underscored how the Bowie State MARC Joint Development Projectwill improve station accessibility, strengthen connections between the university and the community and align with broader regional growth strategies.

Dr. Breaux emphasized the project's alignment with Bowie State's Economic Development Plan, "Honoring the Past While Racing to the Future," which is guided by four pillars: placemaking, community, growth and innovation. She noted that the MARC station development will transform underused land into a walkable, mixed-use destination that directly connects Bowie State to transit, housing and opportunity.

"This development is not just a project. It is a milestone - another bold chapter in the rich 160-year history of Bowie State University - as we continue to move boldly forward into the future," Dr. Breaux said. "Together, through our MOU and the state's Joint Development Program, we are setting the foundation for new housing, jobs, retail and innovation spaces that will enrich both Bowie State University and the surrounding community."

The event featured remarks from MDOT, Bowie State and county partners, followed by a walking tour of the MARC station and surrounding site. Participants learned about development plans designed to enhance transit use, support smart growth and expand opportunities for students and residents alike.

Delegate Taylor, whose legislative aide is a Bowie State senior, emphasized her dedication to projects that unite education, transportation and economic progress.

"The Bowie State MARC Joint Development Project is a great example of how smart investments in transportation can open doors to both educational and economic opportunity. This project strengthens the connection between our students, families and jobs across the region, helping Bowie State and our community grow together," Taylor said.

As Bowie State continues to play a leading role in regional partnerships, the MARC Joint Development Project reflects the university's broader mission: advancing progress that benefits both students and the wider community.
