Taipei, Taiwan, March 11, 2026 - Federal Express Corporation (FedEx), one of the world's largest express transportation companies, today announced the official opening of its newly expanded Transshipment Center at Taoyuan International Airport. This facility represents FedEx's largest single investment in Taiwan in its 35-year history, significantly increasing the facility's footprint and sorting capacity to meet the rising logistics demand from Taiwan's key industries including high-tech, semiconductors, e-commerce, and a wide range of other sectors driving the island's economic growth.
The new facility doubles the footprint of the previous site, spanning approximately 19,000 square meters. It features an advanced automated sorting system that processes up to 9,000 packages per hour. Efficiency is 2.5 times higher for imports and 1.2 times for exports compared to the former facility. Enhanced capabilities for handling express parcels, freight, and specialized shipments, including hazardous materials and cold-chain goods, strengthen operational safety and supply-chain resilience. Businesses shipping across borders benefit from greater speed and reliability.
The new Transshipment Center operates with a fully electrified fleet of ground support equipment. The deployment of electric cargo tugs represents a major shift from traditional diesel-powered models, eliminating an estimated 21 to 26 kilograms of CO2 emissions per vehicle every day. This initiative, supported by comprehensive airside charging infrastructure, significantly minimizes the noise levels and improves mechanical efficiency.
"As economies across Asia Pacific become increasingly interconnected through trade and investment, businesses need a logistics backbone that can keep pace with shifting trade flows," said Salil Chari, regional president, Asia Pacific, FedEx. "The expansion of our Taiwan Transshipment Center reinforces FedEx's commitment to building logistics infrastructure that delivers the speed, reliability, and agility customers need to strengthen their supply chains and grow their reach across new markets."
As a global hub for semiconductor manufacturing, Taiwan's industry output reached NT$6.84 trillion in 2025[1], with manufacturing capacity expected to account for approximately 80% of the global total by 2030[2], underscoring its critical role in the high-tech supply chain.
Moving high-value, time-sensitive products such as semiconductors and precision instruments require exceptional reliability, real-time visibility, and rigorous security at every stage of the journey. FedEx addresses these needs by integrating FedEx Surround® Monitoring[3] and Intervention and SenseAware ID[4] sensor technology in its cross-border shipping. Additionally, through the FedEx® Sustainability Insights (FSI)[5] digital tool, for eligible shipments, FSI allows customers to evaluate and manage their carbon[6] impact, review their FedEx shipping history to better understand shipping patterns and environmental impact and create reports to provide transparency to customers and stakeholders.
Beyond supporting tech manufacturing leaders, FedEx continues to empower Taiwan's Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in reaching global markets. The newly expanded Transshipment Center strengthens FedEx's regional network. These network investments enable more flexible and efficient cross-border movement of goods, helping lower trade barriers and accelerating Taiwanese SMEs' access to international opportunities.
"The opening of our new Transshipment Center represents an important step forward for FedEx in Taiwan," said Paul Sousa, Managing Director of FedEx Taiwan. "By enhancing our network capabilities, this facility increases overall sorting capacity and operational efficiency, reinforcing support for Taiwan's strategic export sectors. It will also help strengthen Taiwan's connectivity to global markets. We remain committed to working closely with our customers and partners to deliver reliable, quality and more sustainable logistics solutions that contribute to Taiwan's trade and economic growth."
FedEx began operations at Taoyuan International Airport in 1990 and currently operates 10 World Service Centers, 9 stations, over 8,000 authorized shipping Centers, and a fleet of more than 400 vehicles across Taiwan. Supported by 40 weekly flights connecting Taiwan to the United States, Europe, and Asia Pacific markets, the expanded Transshipment Center further enhances parcel and freight handling efficiency, operational safety and supply-chain management capabilities, while reinforcing Taiwan's pivotal role in the global supply chain.
