Guilford County man charged with insurance fraud after false stolen car report

North Carolina Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey today announced the arrest of Phillip Christopher Robinson Sr., 66, of 206 Willowood Dr., High Point. Robinson is charged with one count of insurance fraud and one count of attempting to obtain property by false pretense. Both charges are felonies.<_o3a_p>

According to special agents with the NC Department of Insurance's Criminal Investigations Division, Robinson filed a claim with Sentry Insurance, reporting his vehicle as stolen and attempting to collect $1,800.<_o3a_p>

Investigators later determined the vehicle was located at a nearby mechanic shop, where Robinson had previously dropped it off to be fixed.<_o3a_p>

The incident occurred on May 16, according to the warrant.<_o3a_p>

Robinson was served a criminal summons on July 14 and is expected to appear in Guilford County District Court on Aug. 12.<_o3a_p>

"Insurance fraud hits consumers in the wallet," Commissioner Causey said. "Approximately 20 cents of every insurance premium dollar goes to covering the cost of fraud. I'm fighting this by aggressively pursuing and prosecuting insurance fraud in North Carolina."<_o3a_p>
