ROSWELL, GA - On January 9, 2026, the National Park Service signed a Finding of No Significant Impact and a Floodplain and Wetlands Statement of Finding for the Roswell Gateway and Vickery Creek Unit Access Improvements Environmental Assessment at Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area.
This project ties together two transportation projects and improvements to Vickery Creek as part of a partnership between NPS, Georgia Department of Transportation, Federal Highway Administration, and the City of Roswell. The decision authorizes the NPS to issue a Special Use Permit to the City of Roswell for trail, bridge, and parking access improvements within the Vickery Creek Unit; a Special Use Permit to GDOT for temporary use of NPS lands during road construction; and a highway easement deed to the FHWA to convert approximately 2.59 acres of NPS land to transportation use in support of GDOT roadway improvements along portions of State Route 9, State Route 120, and Riverside Road/Azalea Drive.
"The improvements will enhance accessibility to the park and provide better connectivity across Vickery Creek and within the trail system," said Acting Superintendent Patrick Gamman. "This milestone is one step closer to bringing safety to a risky intersection while highlighting important history like Allenbrook."
In compliance with the National Environmental Policy Act and the National Historic Preservation Act, the Environmental Assessment analyzed transportation and recreation projects affecting park lands and determined that the approved actions would not result in significant environmental impacts and would not impair park resources or values. The EA was available for public review from June 30 to July 31, 2025, via the NPS Planning, Environment and Public Comment (PEPC) website. Public feedback was also received through GDOT public meetings.
The EA, FONSI and Statement of Finding are available on the PEPC website at https://parkplanning.nps.gov/RoswellHistoricGatewayEA.
