Statement from Chairman Aguilar on the SAVE America Act

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar released the following statement on his vote against the SAVE America Act:

"For a decade, Donald Trump and Republicans have been doing everything in their power to suppress the vote and undermine confidence in our elections. The so-called 'SAVE America Act' is just the latest attempt at their goal.

"In the last year alone, we've seen Donald Trump call for the nationalization of our elections, seize voting machines, raid a Georgia election office, attack mail-in voting, and call up governors demanding they find him more Republican Congressional seats.

"He has made it clear that he doesn't care about the law, he doesn't care about the Constitution and he doesn't care about your right to vote, he only cares about himself.

"House Republicans will claim this bill is common sense, but the truth is it is anything but that: it's a federal takeover of state and local elections. The 'SAVE America Act' does nothing to secure our elections; instead, it would hand over sensitive voter information to Kristi Noem's out-of-control Department of Homeland Security. On top of that, it would block millions of American citizens from registering to vote and create unnecessary barriers for married women who have changed their names, domestic violence victims, people of color and rural voters to make their voices heard at the ballot box.

"Instead of focusing on addressing the affordability crisis they created, Donald Trump and Republicans are spending their time and your tax dollars to rig the election in their favor. Today, House Democrats stood united in opposition to this extreme legislation. We will never stop fighting to defend our democracy."
