Recognition highlights leadership in advancing Stony Brook Medicine as an integrated academic health system serving Long Island
STONY BROOK, NY, April 8, 2026- William Wertheim, MD, MBA, Executive Vice President of Stony Brook Medicine, has been named one of Crain's New York Business 2026 Notable Leaders in Healthcare.

Under Dr. Wertheim's leadership, Stony Brook Medicine has advanced as a fully integrated academic health system, bringing together patient-centered care, education and innovative research to better serve the communities of Long Island. Dr. Wertheim has spent nearly three decades at Stony Brook Medicine, during which he has risen from practicing internist to system-wide executive leadership, reflecting a career defined by purpose, vision and an enduring commitment to the communities Stony Brook Medicine serves.
William Wertheim, MD, MBA, Executive Vice President of Stony Brook Medicine, has been named one of Crain's New York Business 2026 Notable Leaders in Healthcare.Among his most significant achievements, Wertheim led the transformation of Stony Brook Medicine into a unified academic health system, overseeing a four-hospital network, five health sciences schools and an expansive ambulatory footprint serving Long Island. He has simultaneously expanded access to care through telehealth, community-based initiatives, and growth on the East End, including a new freestanding emergency department, while reinforcing Stony Brook Medicine's standing as Suffolk County's only academic medical center.
