Syracuse Man Charged with Making Threats Against the President

Christopher Vignogna, age 26, of Syracuse, New York, appeared in Federal Court Friday, October 9, 2026, on a charge of making threats against the President of the United States. First Assistant United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III and United States Secret Service, Special Agent in Charge Charles T. Perras made the announcement.

The complaint filed against Vignogna alleges that on October 7, 2026, Vignogna asked a co-worker to inquire if her boyfriend could buy Vignogna a gun so he could shoot the President at a rally in Syracuse on October 9, 2026. The complaint alleges that Vignogna also stated that Trump is coming to Syracuse and I want to shoot him.

The charge filed against Vignogna carries a maximum sentence of 5 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, and a term of supervised release of up to 3 years. A defendant's sentence is imposed by a judge based on the particular statute(s) the defendant is convicted of violating, the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other factors.

Vignogna was arraigned before United States Magistrate Judge Mitchell J. Katz and released on conditions pending a trial.

First Assistant United States Attorney John A. Sarcone III stated, "I want to commend the U.S. Secret Service for their swift and immediate response to this serious conduct. May this arrest serve as a deterrent to others who think it is acceptable to threaten the President of the United States. It will not be tolerated on my watch."

United States Secret Service, Special Agent in Charge Charles T. Perras said, "The United States Secret Service reaffirms that the safety and security of our protectees remains our highest priority. Every potential threat is taken seriously, investigated thoroughly, and pursued with the full intention of bringing individuals who violate the law to justice. This mission is not accomplished alone. Collaboration with our state, local, and federal partners is essential to ensuring swift and successful protective and investigative operations. The Secret Service extends its appreciation to the U.S. Attorney's Office, Northern District of New York, the Federal Bureau of Investigation's Albany Office, and the Onondaga County Sheriff's Office for their continued support and cooperation."

The charges in the complaint are merely accusations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

This case is being investigated by the United States Secret Service. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Whalen.
