Ministry Statements & Speeches: 13 March 2026
Mr President,
Special Rapporteur thank you for your report.
New Zealand remains deeply concerned by the rapidly worsening human rights and humanitarian crisis across Myanmar. The military's continued violence and repression against the people of Myanmar is unacceptable.
Over one third of Myanmar's population now faces food insecurity. The plight of Rohingya, many of whom now reside in neighbouring countries, is particularly concerning. Rising transnational crime, online scam centres and human trafficking, also harm the people of Myanmar and neighbouring countries.
New Zealand has contributed NZ$86.02 million in development and humanitarian assistance to Myanmar since the 2021 coup. However, only a small proportion of the humanitarian needs are being met.
We reiterate our full support for ASEAN's central role in finding a resolution to the crisis, including the work of the ASEAN Chair and Special Envoy, consistent with the Five Point Consensus.
The current trajectory is not sustainable for Myanmar or the region. New Zealand continues to support calls for genuine, constructive, and inclusive dialogue to find a peaceful solution. The people of Myanmar deserve a future grounded in leadership representing the will of the people, peaceful and transparent governance, and respect for human rights.
Special Rapporteur, how can countries work together to support the people of Myanmar?
