New helmets, newly pinned badges and a new responsibility to serve the community marked a milestone this afternoon for 13 of Volusia County Fire Rescue's newest firefighters as they graduated from the division's New Hire Academy. Surrounded by family, friends, and colleagues, the graduates celebrated the culmination of their academy training before officially reporting to their stations tomorrow.

The graduation included two traditions marking the recruits' transition into the fire service. Each new firefighter received a fire helmet, an enduring symbol of the profession and the responsibility that comes with serving the community. Family members then pinned badges on the graduates, recognizing the loved ones whose support helped them reach the milestone.

"There's a lot of meaning behind the helmets, badges, and uniforms these firefighters received today because they represent the commitment that comes with this profession," said Volusia County Fire Chief Joe King. "Tomorrow, they'll walk into their stations as members of our team, ready to learn from the experienced firefighters beside them and answer the call when our residents need them. We're proud of what they've accomplished and even more excited about what lies ahead."

During the New Hire Academy, recruits prepared for the responsibilities and demands of serving with Volusia County Fire Rescue through classroom instruction and hands-on training. The academy familiarized recruits with operations, equipment, procedures, and expectations while reinforcing the teamwork, communication, and decision-making required in an emergency response environment. The skills gained during the academy will serve as a foundation as the new firefighters begin their station assignments and continue growing in their roles alongside experienced crews.
