ARLINGTON, Texas- Texas Health Resources is proud to be recognized as a Texan by Nature 20 (TxN 20) industry leader in sustainability and conservation for the seventh consecutive time. It is the only health system included in the 2025 class of honorees.
"Being named to the TxN 20 is more than an honor - it's a reflection of our unwavering commitment to building a healthier future for North Texans, not just through care, but through conservation," said Barclay Berdan, FACHE, CEO at Texas Health. "We believe that sustainability is a form of stewardship, and caring for our environment is deeply connected to caring for our communities."
Texan by Nature (TxN) is a nonprofit organization founded by former first lady Laura Bush to bring conservation and business together for the benefit of Texas. The TxN 20 honor recognizes the best and most innovative conservation work in the state.
"Our conservation efforts go beyond reducing emissions or saving water; they're embedded into daily operations and deeply connected to improving lives," said Shaun Clinton, senior vice president, Supply Chain Management at Texas Health.
The health system has a strong commitment to conserving natural resources - from building energy-efficient facilities to repurposing and recycling waste materials to using low-water irrigation.
Texas Health utilizes conservation measures that reduce waste, energy and water consumption and designs new buildings to meet energy and environmental standards. Green building guidelines and design excellence standards are incorporated into expansion and renovation projects. These standards are at the forefront of projects underway, including new Texas Health hospitals in Forney and Willow Park and the addition of an eight-story tower at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Plano.
The health system's sustainability initiatives go beyond reducing environmental impact by empowering local communities and supporting healthy food access through Texas Health Community Hope. These efforts include the Good For You Healthy Hub, which offers produce and nutrition education to vulnerable families. The Culled Produce Recovery Program reduces food waste by delivering past-prime fruits and vegetables from a regional grocery chain to participating urban farms that use it as compost.
TxN has been working with the Texas business community to implement Texas-led conservation practices. The TxN 20 provides not only recognition to honorees, but a catalogue of best practices and metrics to industry peers.
"I'm thrilled to celebrate this year's TxN 20! Their leadership shows what is possible, and I encourage other companies to follow their example by engaging in conservation. Together, we can set the standard for sustaining a prosperous economy, rich natural resources, and a secure future for the next generation," said former First Lady and Texan by Nature Founder, Laura Bush.
