Trinseo, Lapo and laprima plastic Showcase Potential for PMMA Circularity with Recycling Demonstration Through Depolymerization
Building on their successful collaboration to develop demonstration eyewear lenses containing recycled polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), Trinseo, Lapo s.r.l. and laprima plastics s.r.l. have achieved another significant milestone, showcasing the potential of circular solutions for the eyewear industry with PMMA recycled via depolymerization.
After more than two years of dedicated development and collaboration across the value chain, the partners collected, prepared and recycled internal PMMA demo-lens waste from eyewear companies, converting it back into crude methyl methacrylate (MMA), the building block of acrylic resins.
This achievement marks an important step toward demonstrating how end-of-life PMMA materials from the eyewear industry can potentially be recovered and reintroduced into the value chain through advanced recycling technologies.
Turning Lens Waste into a Valuable Resource
The project builds upon the earlier collaboration between Trinseo and Lapo, which demonstrated the use of recycled-content PMMA in premium eyewear lenses. In that project, Lapo tested and approved Trinseo's ALTUGLAS™ R-LIFE™ PMMA resin containing at least 86% recycled content for demanding optical applications.
The latest milestone moves the industry closer to a truly circular model by focusing on recovering PMMA waste generated during lens-related activities. Through enhanced collection practices, PMMA demo-lens waste streams were gathered and prepared for recycling. laprima plastics carried out grinding and purification activities that significantly reduced contamination from other materials, including polycarbonate, glass and polyamide , creating a feedstock suitable for advanced recycling.
Supported by encouraging laboratory-scale evaluations conducted at Trinseo's Rho, Italy, facility, the purified PMMA waste stream was blended with additional PMMA feedstocks and successfully processed through Trinseo's depolymerization technology. The industrial-scale trial produced crude recycled MMA for further processing, demonstrating the technical feasibility of recovering acrylic materials from post-industrial lens waste.
Demonstrating the Potential of Depolymerization Recycling for Eyewear
Depolymerization is an advanced recycling process that converts end-of-life PMMA back into MMA monomer, enabling the production of new PMMA materials while preserving the polymer's intrinsic value.
The successful trial demonstrates how PMMA waste can be collected, processed, depolymerized and converted into recycled feedstock, helping demonstrate a potential pathway to close the loop for acrylic materials used in eyewear applications.
By combining waste collection, pre-processing expertise, advanced recycling technology and application know-how, the partners have shown how collaboration across the value chain can help address the growing demand for circular material solutions.
Collaboration Across the Value Chain
The achievement reflects the commitment and expertise of all project partners: the eyewear company contributed by improving the collection and segregation of PMMA demo-lens waste. laprima plastics developed the necessary grinding and purification processes to prepare the material for recycling. Lapo provided application expertise in eyewear lenses, while Trinseo leveraged its depolymerization capabilities and expertise in acrylic materials to convert the recovered PMMA into recycled MMA.
Driving Towards a Future with Circular Acrylics
The successful implementation of Trinseo's R-LIFE™ business model and this recycling demonstration represent important steps toward creating more circular value chains for PMMA.
While further development and scaling opportunities remain, the project demonstrates the potential of advanced recycling technologies to recover acrylic materials that would otherwise be discarded and transform them into valuable resources for future applications.
By bringing together expertise from across the PMMA value chain, Trinseo, laprima plastics, and Lapo are helping to explore practical pathways for increased circularity, supporting the transition toward a more resource-efficient future for the eyewear industry.
