Joint Message from Police Chief Cregan and Fire Chief Westrope Ahead of July 4th Celebrations

In the face of high temperatures, low humidity, and early season fire activity, we urge Santa Rosa residents and visitors to make safe choices and NOT use fireworks when celebrating Fourth of July in the City.

Regardless of the allure and nostalgia of fireworks, remember that ALL fireworks are illegal in Santa Rosa and the surrounding unincorporated areas. Concerned calls from our community reporting the use of fireworks are on the rise. We're urging those that are using fireworks to STOP immediately and safely dispose of unspent fireworks.

"As we approach the Fourth of July, I want to speak to you not only as your Fire Chief but as a fellow member of this community-a neighbor, a parent, and a protector of our shared safety." Said Fire Chief Scott Westrope. "Each year, fireworks cause countless fires, devastating injuries, and emergency calls that strain first responders and put lives at risk. Here in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County, we've seen firsthand the damage they can do to homes, families, pets, and entire neighborhoods. That's why I'm asking you-please do not use fireworks. Let's celebrate with pride, not regret. Together, we can enjoy a safe, respectful holiday that honors both our independence and our responsibility to one another."

Enforcement teams from both the police and fire departments will be patrolling the City in the days leading up to, and over, the holiday weekend. Santa Rosa Police will cite individuals violating the City's fireworks ban, including fines up to $1,000 and confiscation of any illegal fireworks, but please do not let it get to that point.

"The police department is acutely aware of the dangers associated with illegal fireworks." Said Police Chief John Cregan. "Dedicated police officers will be responding to reports of fireworks, and we will have zero tolerance for any violations that are discovered. I ask that everyone enjoy the sanctioned fireworks display at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds and have a safe and fun weekend with friends and family."

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) reports an estimated ~31,000 fires are caused by fireworks nationwide. We are all accountable for doing our part to protect Santa Rosa from the threat of wildfire. Please keep this in mind as you make your plans for the upcoming holiday.

Celebrate safely and be well,
Chief John Cregan and Chief Scott Westrope
