Dog adoptions resume at FWACC PetSmart locations

Published on April 10, 2025

Dog adoptions have officially resumed at Fort Worth Animal Care & Control's PetSmart Everyday Adoption Centers. After a brief pause, the centers are once again matching healthy, adoptable dogs from the Silcox shelter with new families.

Why it matters: Thanks to continued efforts of the FWACC team, low-risk dogs can now be safely transferred to PetSmart Everyday Adoption Center locations. These dogs have met all the necessary health criteria, including:

  • At least one negative test for distemper
  • At least 21 days in FWACC care
  • Two rounds of vaccinations (including boosters)
  • A clean bill of health from the veterinary staff

While staff is moving forward with caution, this development marks a meaningful step forward in an ongoing commitment to animal health and community well-being.

Please note: The North Animal Campus and Silcox Adoption Center remain temporarily closed to the public and volunteers as staff monitors the canine distemper virus situation. FWACC staff have also begun processing adoptions that were approved or placed on hold before the temporary closure on March 24. In addition, rescue partners have resumed tagging eligible animals for transfer.

What happens next: Look for further updates as they become available.

If you're considering adoption, visit the PetSmart Hulen or PetSmart Alliance locations to meet the dogs available for adoption.
