Empowering Wits’ newest academics

Empowering Wits' newest academics

20 February 2026 - Wits University

New members to the academy find support through the CLTD programme.

The Now@Wits programme, an institutional flagship initiative led by the Centre for Learning, Teaching and Development (CLTD), concluded in February 2026 after an 11-month journey that began in April 2025. Designed to support academics who are new to the University, the programme engaged a cohort of 46 participants from across all five faculties, spanning early- to senior-career stages.

Set against the backdrop of a complex and evolving higher education sector, Now@Wits responds to the need for structured, theorised professional learning that enables academics to transition effectively into their roles. Through collaboration with faculties and the Research Office, the programme supports participants in developing their academic identities while strengthening confidence, self-knowledge and agency.

The curriculum focused on cohering research, teaching and academic citizenship roles, particularly in relation to probation requirements. Participants engaged in a mandatory orientation, community of engagement sessions tailored to career stage, and communities of practice centred on learning and teaching, curriculum, assessment and the scholarship of teaching and learning. A peer-review mentoring project further enriched the experience, culminating in a valedictory celebration themed "Being and Becoming a Witsie" centered around self- and co-nurturing.

Programme leader Rieta Ganas at CLTD emphasised the strategic alignment of the initiative: "The Now@Wits programme is responsive to the six integrated focus calls within Wits' Learning and Teaching Strategic Plan".

She noted that the programme enhances learning and teaching, research and scholarship, and academic citizenship in holistic ways, often inspiring participants to pursue the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (Higher Education) to deepen their reflexive practice.

For Dr Matthew Ikuabe from the School of Construction Economics and Management, the impact was tangible. "The Now@Wits offered a comprehensive and well-structured induction that significantly deepened my understanding of the institutional culture, governance frameworks, and academic ethos of the University of the Witwatersrand," he said.

He furthers added that the programme aligned his academic responsibilities with Wits' values and strategic goals, equipping him to contribute more effectively to teaching excellence, research impact and academic citizenship.

The @Wits continues to play a critical role in cultivating elite and responsive academics at Wits.
