From self-defense education and resource fairs to neighborhood cleanups and a major citywide celebration, these efforts strengthened community connections and reflected Safe Blocks' commitment to inclusive outreach.

On July 7, Safe Blocks returned to Dawson Park to host the 'I AM Dawson Park' Resource Fair, modeled on the earlier June event. Residents accessed essential services including housing, food, health, and wellness resources aimed at reducing community violence and supporting neighborhood wellbeing. Translation, interpretation, and accessibility accommodations were available on site. The fair provided a supportive and inclusive space for families, individuals, and neighbors to connect with service providers.

July 15 brought two Introductory Personal Safety & Self-Defense Workshops, offered simultaneously at Midland Library and Holgate Library. Presented with Rose City Self-Defense, these sessions empowered adolescents and adults with practical skills in assertive communication, de-escalation, and situational awareness. Snacks were provided, and accessibility accommodations were available to ensure inclusive participation.

On July 16, Safe Blocks partnered with community organizations at the TriMet Menlo Park Park & Ride for another I AM East Portland Resource Fair. This mid-summer event provided wrap-around services, including food access, health supports, and community programs, continuing Safe Blocks' commitment to accessible outreach during the summer months.

July 22 focused on community stewardship with a Ventura Park Cleanup coordinated with SOLVE. Volunteers removed litter and refreshed green spaces with all required materials-bags, gloves, and vests-provided by Safe Blocks. The event highlighted the importance of shared neighborhood care and improving park environments.

The month culminated with the National Night Out - District 4 Kick-Off Event at Director Park on July 31. This large-scale celebration brought families, neighbors, and public safety organizations together to strengthen relationships and foster community trust. The event opened with complimentary food, an array of interactive lawn games, and hands-on demonstrations that welcomed attendees into a festive and inclusive atmosphere. City and County leadership delivered opening remarks, encouraging safety partnerships and community involvement.

Throughout the evening, attendees visited booths and displays hosted by Portland Police Bureau, Portland Fire & Rescue, Portland Bureau of Emergency Communications, Neighborhood Emergency Team, Portland Street Response, Ceasefire, American Medical Response, Vision Zero, Multnomah County departments, Portland Solutions, Rose City Self-Defense, and other partners. Demonstrations showcased emergency response tools, public safety vehicles, and practical safety techniques, offering residents an in-depth look at resources that help keep Portland safe.

A community food drive invited donations of non-perishable items-including canned goods, cereals, pasta, and other staples-to support families experiencing food insecurity. Jumbo Connect Four, Jenga, cornhole, and live DJ music created a vibrant and celebratory atmosphere throughout the event. Complimentary hot dogs and hamburgers, sponsored by Portland Solutions, added to the welcoming environment.

This highly attended, energetic gathering exemplified Safe Blocks' mission: connecting residents with public safety partners through celebration, transparency, and collaborative engagement. The July 31 event capped a month of strong community involvement, setting the tone for continued partnership and resilience across Portland neighborhoods.
