This Earth Day, we're highlighting the partners behind our Shop Sustainably™ program and the meaningful steps they're taking to design a more responsible future for home.
One of those partners is Blu Dot, a modern furniture brand founded nearly 30 years ago in Minneapolis by three college friends, John Christakos, Charlie Lazor and Maurice Blanks, who believed great design should be accessible to more people.
"Blu Dot wanted to pursue the idea of democratic design," shared Colin Corrado, senior designer at Blu Dot. "Design that is good, affordable and available to the most people."
That founding ethos still guides the company today. With a small, tenured design team that remains closely involved in every product, Blu Dot continues to blend accessibility with thoughtful craftsmanship and responsible sourcing. Blu Dot's partnership with Wayfair extends back more than a decade, beginning early in both companies' journeys.
For Blu Dot, sustainability is rooted in trust.
"We want customers to feel a sense of pride when they buy a piece of furniture from us," Colin said. "That it's going to last, that it's safe and that it's healthy for their environment."
That commitment is reflected in the company's sourcing and certifications. Today, 100% of Blu Dot's teak wood furniture is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®), meaning it is sourced from responsibly managed forests that meet rigorous environmental and social standards. In addition, Blu Dot's entire Decade seating collection is made using 100% pre-consumer recycled polypropylene.
Beyond specific certifications, Blu Dot maintains a comprehensive wood sourcing policy to ensure materials come from responsibly managed forests. The goal is long-term availability and accountability when sourcing products.
"At the end of the day, we want to be able to reproduce our furniture without worrying about the future of the material," Colin explained.
Sustainability begins at the design stage. Blu Dot's team is involved from initial sketch through manufacturing and shipping, allowing them to make thoughtful decisions about materials, construction and packaging early in the process. Aligning design and packaging choices helps Blu Dot reduce foam packaging and makes shipping more efficient.
Each piece is prototyped and tested to meet high standards for durability and quality. The aim is to create timeless designs that customers will want to live with for years.
"We want to create products that last as long as possible and become heirloom pieces," said Colin.
By focusing on durability, responsible sourcing and efficient packaging, Blu Dot approaches sustainability holistically, from concept to customer.
"Our sustainable suppliers play a critical role in building a more responsible home industry," said Devin Giles, head of Global Sustainability & ESG at Wayfair. "By partnering with brands like Blu Dot that design for longevity, prioritize responsibly sourced materials and hold themselves to rigorous performance standards, we're advancing transparency and expanding access to more sustainable options."
