Celebrate National Walk & Roll to School Day on Oct. 8

The Wheaton Bicyclist and Pedestrian Commission encourages Wheaton schools to join over 1,900 schools from around the country to celebrate National "Walk & Roll to School Day" on Wednesday, Oct. 8. This event encourages children to bike, walk, or scooter to school, promoting physical activity, fostering community, and reducing traffic congestion around schools. It also raises awareness about the need for safe walking and bicycling routes. Each participating school is independently organizing its event; please check with your local school for further details.

"Walk & Roll to School is fun and a great way to get kids out on their bikes or scooters," said Michelle Dunlap, co-chair of the Wheaton Bicyclist and Pedestrian Commission. "Our hope is that this event can be a great kick-off for parents and kids biking to school not just on Oct. 8, but through the rest of the school year. This event helps build connections between families, schools and the Wheaton community. We encourage drivers to be good neighbors and slow down when driving in and around school zones."

More information about Walk & Roll to School Day can be found at www.walkbiketoschool.org. And more information about creating safe routes to schools can be found through the National Center for Safe Routes to Schools at www.saferoutesinfo.org.

The Bicyclist and Pedestrian Commission was created to encourage walking and biking for all in Wheaton. Its mission is to represent walkers, runners and bikers in the planning of safer streets, paths and sidewalks. The Commission meets monthly, with its next meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 15. Members of the public can join the meeting in person at City Hall or via Zoom, and those who want to become more involved can apply to join the commission.
