The Organization of American States (OAS) and Paraguay's Superior Tribunal of Electoral Justice (TSJE) signed an Electoral Cooperation Agreement with the aim of strengthening the country's democratic processes and electoral systems.
During the signing ceremony, held at OAS headquarters in Washington, D.C., the president of the TSJE, Jaime José Bestard Duschek, thanked OAS Secretary General Albert R. Ramdin and noted that "once again we are counting on a technical support mission" from the OAS, which will provide assistance for "the upcoming municipal elections."
For his part, Secretary General Ramdin said that "electoral institutions require technical capacity, as well as respect, independence, and autonomy, in order to organize elections from a technical perspective, thereby guaranteeing citizens' fundamental rights through a secret, honest, and transparent electoral process."
The agreement also establishes a framework for technical cooperation, the exchange of experiences, and the development of joint electoral programs and projects between the two institutions.
