Delft, 14 May 2025 - Elkien is a major housing corporation in Friesland. With nearly 20,000 homes, the corporation manages a substantial amount of confidential and personal data from tenants.
Elkien and Fox-IT have been working closely together to ensure the security of this data, and their collaboration has now been extended for another five years. This extension follows a successful cyber security initiative that Elkien has undertaken over the past 4.5 years.
Five years ago, Elkien made the decision to significantly improve its cyber security. To achieve this, Fox-IT provided a wide range of services, including consulting, monitoring, and penetration testing. Over the years, Elkien has evolved from an inexperienced and vulnerable corporation into an organisation that implements best practices in security. Now that its cyber resilience is well established, the focus will shift to maintaining its security, taking practical measures, and adapting to new developments. Over the next five years, Fox-IT will continue to provide independent monitoring services and security advice. Additionally, Fox-IT will periodically conduct penetration testing to verify that Elkien's IT environment remains secure.
Impenetrable
These penetration tests assess the state of digital resilience. Based on the results, Fox-IT provides recommendations for improvements, which are then implemented by Elkien's IT partner, Avantage. During the most recent penetration test, Fox-IT's testers were no longer able to breach Elkien's network, thanks to ongoing improvements and new security measures. Elkien can rightfully take pride in this achievement.
Vulnerable
Housing corporations are vulnerable because they handle large amounts of sensitive information, making them attractive targets for ransomware attacks. Cybercriminals are aware that some housing corporations have paid ransoms following successful attacks. Although the financial damage of such attacks is often relatively limited, they can severely disrupt services. Tenants may be unable to contact the corporation, and their personal data could be stolen and misused.
Peter van de Weg, CEO of Elkien:
"At Elkien, the privacy and security of our residents come first. We take all possible measures to protect their data optimally. That's why we collaborate with Fox-IT, a reliable partner that helps us meet the highest security standards."
Ruud Bos, Managing Director of Fox-IT:
"Elkien's cyber security improvements set an example for the sector. By implementing all recommendations and measures, they can better protect their residents' data. It is rare for penetration testers to be completely unable to access a network, which demonstrates how strong the foundation is now. We have renewed our collaboration and look forward to ensuring that Elkien maintains its cybersecurity at a high level over the next five years."
