Lakewood launches neighborhood bikeways

Come celebrate a new type of bicycle facility in Lakewood with brief remarks and a community bike ride.

WHEN: 10 a.m., Sept. 3.

WHERE: O'Kane Park, northwest corner at intersection of Teller Street
and West Second Avenue.
(On-street parking available on West Second Avenue.)

WHO: Lakewood Mayor Wendi Strom
and community bike advocate Peter McNutt.
Following their remarks, Peter will lead
a community ride along the bikeway.

WHY: Launch three new neighborhood bikeways in the city.

These low-stress neighborhood bikeways require minimal, if any, changes to the existing roadway. Instead, they use existing quiet local streets, allowing a wider range of potential cyclists to find comfortable routes to get to where they want to go. Neighborhood bikeways use wayfinding signs to direct bicyclists to destinations and alert motorists that the street is an official bike route.

Three routes have been added this summer to become Lakewood's first official neighborhood bikeways:

• West Fourth and Fifth avenues east of Garrison Street.
• South Carr Street north of Belmar Park.
• Depew Street south of West First Avenue.
