Seniors and disabled veterans eligible for an expanded amount of Johnson County property tax relief in program’s second year

Johnson County residents who are 65 or older or are a disabled veteran and who meet income and other requirements may qualify for more property tax relief this year.

For the second year of Johnson County's Senior and Disabled Veteran Property Tax Relief program, the Board of County Commissioners removed a previous $200 limit on relief payments for those who qualify. This year, recipients may receive up to the entire amount of the Johnson County portion of their property tax bills.

"This property tax relief program reflects our commitment to provide support to the seniors and disabled veterans in our community who need it most," said Mike Kelly, chairman of the Johnson County Board of County Commissioners. "By removing the $200 cap on payments, we hope that even more of our residents will take advantage of this opportunity."

Johnson County began accepting applications for the program this week, and those interested in participating should submit the application before the April 15 deadline. Residents can apply to participate in the new program online by completing the application form and submitting it, along with proof of income and/or disability status. The form can be submitted in person, by email or by postal mail.

Residents must be at or below income limits and have a home with a maximum 2024 appraised value of $384,600. A complete list of Income and other program requirements is available on the county's website.

In 2023, the Board of County Commissioners authorized $500,000 in funding for the county to provide a pilot program to offer property tax relief to low-income seniors and disabled veterans. The program was extended in 2024 using the remaining funds for applicants who wish to apply for relief this year.

While this program covers only the county's portion of a resident's property tax bill, other property tax programs are also available through the state. Information on those programs is available at jocogov.org/PropertyTaxRelief. Many Johnson County cities also offer programs.
