Original Press Release: Announcing the GM on Main Street Grant Recipients | Main Street America

Release Date: April 24, 2025

The Unified Government Transportation Department is one of five recipients of the GM on Main Street Grant. Powered by General Motors and Main Street America, the program awarded five $60,000 grants to nonprofit organizations and municipal government entities near GM facilities and to a tribal community within the Main Street network to implement innovative transportation initiatives in their local districts.

The grant will support the 7th Street Transit Hub Revitalization: Connecting Community & Creativity project, which will allow the department to significantly enhance the 7th & Minnesota Transit Hub, transforming it into a more functional, inclusive, and inspiring space for riders. This revitalization directly addresses the hub's outdated infrastructure and lack of aesthetic appeal by introducing artistically designed seating, a culturally reflective mural, and essential amenities like bike racks-all while ensuring the space remains safe, accessible, and aligned with the needs of a diverse community.

"This grant gives us the opportunity to reimagine the 7th & Minnesota Transit Hub-not just as a stop, but as a vibrant space that reflects and serves our community. We're excited to bring art, accessibility, and essential upgrades together in a way that truly connects people and place," said Deasiray Bush, Director.

Presented by General Motors, the GM on Main Street Grant Program champions place-based solutions that prioritize pedestrian-friendly infrastructure, inclusive urban design, and sustainable mobility.

This year's grant recipients include the City of Elgin (Elgin, TX), the Heart of Scottsville, Inc. (Scottsville, KY), the City of Avondale Estates (Avondale Estates, GA), the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City Transportation Department (Kansas City, KS), and the Forest County Potawatomi Community (Forest County, WI). We are pleased to share that four of this year's grantees are Accredited or Affiliate Main Street America programs or part of the Main Street network through the Thriving Communities Program.

From custom-designed bike racks and wayfinding programs to pedestrian-friendly crosswalks and cultural murals, this year's GM on Main Street grant recipients will drive innovative transportation initiatives that benefit the entire community.

"GM on Main Street has become a catalyst for place-based programs in our hometowns and communities across the U.S.," said Alexis Brandl, road safety grantmaking lead at GM. "We're excited to continue to work with Main Street America as they help support nonprofit and municipality projects that prioritize road safety in the community."
