WASHINGTON - Today, Ranking Member Robert C. "Bobby" Scott (VA-03), House Committee on Education and Workforce, flagged for Chairman Tim Walberg recent reports of antisemitic activity connected to college-affiliated Republican groups. In addition to bringing this activity to the Chairman's attention, Ranking Member Scott asked Chairman Walberg whether the Committee intended to take any action related to this activity.
Ranking Member Scott cited multiple reported incidents, including students affiliated with College Republican groups engaging in antisemitic rhetoric, sharing Nazi imagery, and participating in group chats promoting extremist views.
"Over the last two Congresses, our Committee has spent considerable time and effort focused on antisemitic activity in schools, on college campuses, and within professional associations and unions," wrote Ranking Member Scott. "As such, I want to ensure you are aware that there have been recent reports of antisemitic activity in and around U.S. colleges and universities, and that the Committee has yet to hold a hearing on them. I write to determine if and when the Committee plans to take action related to them."
Lastly, Ranking Member Scott reiterated his longstanding concern that the Committee may not be the appropriate venue to investigate campus antisemitism, noting such matters would be better handled by the Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights. Despite these concerns, the Committee has continued to conduct investigations and hearings.
