ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Three Winthrop University business professors were honored earlier this semester with an Outstanding Community Partnership Award for their collaboration with Keystone Substance Abuse Services.
Each of the faculty members offered a different service for the agency through their classes in the Department of Management and Marketing.
For example, Joanna Jackson, department chair and an assistant professor, ran a poverty simulation as part of a health care management class. Keystone staff then adopted the simulation for its training purposes.
Assistant Professor Larry Stevens worked with the students in a service-learning class to create a food pantry for Keystone's patients.
Business research students in Professor Cara Peters' class learned about the agency's business model, including the services offered, how the non-profit is funded, populations served, and business partners who help support its mission. The students looked at the website, examined state regulations and then were put into teams to conduct focus groups. The results were presented to Keystone's leadership which used the information to guide its strategic planning process.
