Press release No. 127 24.06.2026

The Merops counter-UAS system has been integrated into the defense posture of the Romanian Armed Forces

The Merops counter-drone system, made available to Romania by the United States within the framework of the bilateral Strategic Partnership, has been fully operationalized and integrated into the air defense architecture of the Romanian Armed Forces.

Before being fielded, the system underwent rigorous testing, evaluation, and operational validation.

The Romanian Defence General Staff is constantly adapting its airspace surveillance and defense system to enhance its response capacity and ensure a higher level of protection for the population.

Merops is a modern technological solution based on artificial intelligence algorithms, designed to detect, track, and neutralize small low-altitude aerial targets.

The integration of this system contributes to strengthening Romanian Armed Forces' capabilities in detecting and countering threats generated by unmanned aerial systems, complementing measures already implemented to protect national airspace.

Romanian Armed Forces continue to develop and modernize their air defense and counter-UAS capabilities, in full coordination with allies and partners, to effectively respond to current security challenges and ensure the protection of citizens and the national territory.
