Celebrating the Richards Bay container terminal concession

At a glamorous event hosted by Transnet Ports Authority (TNPA) in the Port of Richards Bay on 20 May 2025, Xolani Mbambo, CEO of Grindrod and representing the Grindrod Eyamakohsi partnership, and Adv. Phyllis Difeto, acting Chief Executive for TNPA, signed the concession agreement to build and operate the container terminal in Richards Bay. A proud moment for Grindrod and Eyamakhosi Resources.

Partnering with Eyamakhosi Resources, Grindrod aims to leverage local insights and strengthen its empowerment agenda, creating shared value for the region and surrounding communities. With over 25 years of experience in the container sector, Grindrod will focus on designing a facility that emphasizes operational excellence, flexibility, and customer-centered solutions. This state-of-the-art hub will facilitate seamless movement across rail, road, and sea, ultimately serving as a catalyst for regional economic integration by reducing logistics costs and improving reliability for cargo owners.

This transformative project, which requires a substantial investment of R285 million, reflects the company's commitment to positively impacting trade in Africa and enhancing the lives of local communities. It will boost the region's economic potential by creating jobs, developing skills, and opening new business opportunities.

Dr. Andile Sangqu, Chairperson of Transnet, said that this project represented a turning point for the port as it will provide diversification and reposition the port to ensure long-term sustainability.

The initiative aligns with Grindrod's strategic priorities, supporting both regional logistics development in Richards Bay and the country's infrastructure-led recovery agenda. This collaborative project promises significant contributions to South Africa's economic growth. As the facility is set to enhance supply chain efficiency and streamline intermodal logistics, it is a vital gateway for containerised cargo in the region.
