AUC Chairperson Condemns the Fatal Attack on UN Peacekeepers In South Sudan

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, strongly condemns the fatal attack carried out by unidentified assailants against a joint patrol of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) in Jonglei State, South Sudan, on 25 August 2026.

The AUC Chairperson pays tribute to the two Ethiopian peacekeepers who tragically lost their lives and the seven injured, helping to promote peace and stability in South Sudan. He calls on the authorities to immediately investigate and prosecute the perpetrators. The AUC Chairperson extends his sincere condolences to the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia as well as to the families, colleagues, and friends of the peacekeepers, who lost their lives killed or were injured in this heinous attack.

The AUC Chairperson reaffirms the commitment of the African Union to continue supporting the Government and people of South Sudan in their efforts to achieve a credible democratic transition and sustainable peace.
