JACKSON - Following a massive field operation across Mississippi and throughout the South, the NAACP has now deployed national legal, policy, and field staff to Mississippi, bolstering the capacity of the NAACP Mississippi State Conference to help voters navigate ballot cure requirements and ensure every eligible vote is counted and certified.

Derrick Johnson, President and CEO, NAACP, said the following:

"Black voters in Mississippi did everything right. They registered, turned out, stood in line, and cast their ballots. Now the process has to do its part. Our field and legal teams are working around the clock in Mississippi to make sure voters who used provisional ballots are counted. With margins this thin, this is what we mean when we say every vote counts. We're working to ensure Black voter are heard and we won't stop until their votes are certified."

The NAACP's deployment of additional election protection resources, including 23 staff members spread across Jackson and Biloxi, follows the Mississippi State Conference's efforts to turn out Black voters for the midterms, consisting of:

  • 1.4 million text messages sent

  • 150,000 doors knocked in 40 Mississippi Counties

  • 17,258 voters registered

  • Opened 11 offices to conduct this work

  • 700,000 flyers mailed, with 16,000 pieces mailed to inactive voters, and 17,000 pieces mailed to the voters NAACP registered

This work is part of the NAACP's massive, multi-million-dollar GOTV program that engaged voters across the country through organizing, voter education, grassroots outreach, digital engagement, leadership development, and Election Protection efforts. Working alongside local branches, youth leaders, faith partners, coalition allies, and 52,000+ volunteers, the organization encouraged participation in communities of color.
