HONOLULU - The Hawai'i Department of Transportation (HDOT) announces to drivers the planned full closure of the H-1 Freeway at the Gulick Avenue overpass for work as part of the Interstate Route H-1 Eastbound Improvements, Ola Lane Overpass to Likelike Highway off-ramp project.

The full closure of the H-1 Freeway between the Middle Street merge and the Likelike Highway off-ramp is scheduled from 8 p.m. on Saturday, June 6, to 8 a.m. the next day, to allow crews to work on overhead electrical line installation spanning the freeway.

  • The following ramps will be closed during this work:
  • King Street on-ramp to the eastbound H-1 Freeway
  • Airport Viaduct on-ramp to the eastbound H-1 Freeway
  • Likelike Highway on-ramp to the westbound H-1 Freeway
  • Middle Street off-ramp from the westbound H-1 Freeway

Eastbound motorists will be detoured via Middle Street to parallel roadways like North King Street, Dillingham Boulevard or North School Street, to rejoin the eastbound H-1 Freeway after the Likelike Highway on-ramp.

Westbound motorists will be detoured via the Likelike Highway off-ramp to parallel roadways like Dillingham Boulevard or North School Street to rejoin the westbound H-1 Freeway at Middle Street. Please see detour map above for details.

This work is in preparation for the deployment of the temporary pedestrian bridge to begin the demolition and reconstruction of the Gulick Avenue overpass. The overpass, which currently offers the lowest vertical clearance on O'ahu, will be rehabilitated through the project and will gain approximately 6 inches in height.

Installation of the temporary bridge will require another full closure of the H-1 Freeway, which is currently scheduled for the evening of Saturday, July 11 from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. the following day, weather permitting. The temporary bridge will increase clearance height from the bottom of the bridge to the roadway by approximately 3 feet; from 14 feet 3 inches clearance, to 17 feet 6 inches. The rendering above shows the eastbound bridge deployment plans spanning two lanes, the actual bridge will fully span the freeway when completed.

Contingency dates of Saturday, July 18, Saturday, July 25, and Saturday, Aug. 1 are tentatively planned for any delays in work due to weather, construction delays, etc.

The Interstate Route H-1 Eastbound Improvements, Ola Lane Overpass to Likelike Highway off-ramp project is designed to improve safety and efficiency on the freeway by eliminating a merge and adding emergency shoulders.

The estimated completion date for the Eastbound H-1 Freeway Improvements Project is February 2028, weather permitting. This is updated from previously estimated October 2027. For more information, please view the project website at https://h1widening.com/
