ROCK HILL, SOUTH CAROLINA - Dozens of university athletes will travel to Winthrop University to compete in the College Disc Golf National Championship April 8-11.
Presented by Innova Disc, the four-day event will feature elite collegiate teams in one of the first Professional Disc Golf Association-sanctioned XMajors of the year, playing at the Winthrop Lake and at two other nearby courses. This is the third year Winthrop has hosted the college championship.
Organizer Jonathan Poole said the event will feature more than 300 schools competing for the national title, culminating a season of qualifiers. The tournament is broken up into three levels for the men's teams and the women's division. More than 700 athletes will compete all together.
Among the top men's teams to watch in Division 1 are from University of North Carolina, Emporia State, N.C. State, Texas A&M and the University of Cincinnati. Top teams in Division 2 and 3 include Liberty, Milligan and Mississippi State. Top women's teams are from Emporia State, Liberty, Redeemer, Milligan and West Michigan.

Playing on a D3 Winthrop team is Kyle Krieckhaus, who is one of the highest-rated competitors in the field.
Chuck Rey, Winthrop's athletics director, said that Winthrop is recognized nationally for the high-level commitment to its club sports, with esports and cornhole capturing national titles. "We are proud that our Disc Golf program is rising to this elite level and grateful to the partnership with Innova and College Disc Golf to again host the National Championships," Rey said. "This event along with the USDGC elevates our Eagles brand like no other school in the country."
