Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Representative Derek Tran (CA-45) introduced a Congressional resolution recognizing the 51st anniversary of Black April, in solemn recognition of the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975. The resolution honors the sacrifices of the U.S. and ARVN soldiers who fought for freedom in Vietnam, pays tribute to the thousands of innocent lives lost after the fall of Saigon, and celebrates the immense contributions of the Vietnamese American community to the United States.
Representative Tran was joined by co-leads Representatives Lou Correa (CA-46), Young Kim (CA-40), and Zoe Lofgren (CA-18). The full text of the resolution is HERE.
"Black April or Tháng Tư Đen is a persistent reminder of the day that hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese people lost our homes, our livelihoods, and our beloved country to a brutal communist regime," said Representative Tran. "I share my own story with hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese Americans born to parents who fled our homeland with nothing. In five short decades, we have built communities across this country defined by inspiring resilience, strength, and an unshakeable commitment to preserving our history. I am so honored to share our journey on the national stage as the Representative for the world's largest Vietnamese diaspora community, and I am humbled by the responsibility to carry our history forward."
The resolution is supported by seven original co-sponsors including Representatives Judy Chu (CA-28), Norma Torres (CA-35), Dave Min (CA-47), Lloyd Doggett (TX-35), Janelle Bynum (OR-05), Ro Khanna (CA-17), and Maxine Dexter (OR-03).
The resolution acknowledges the tragic events of April 30, 1975, when the Republic of Vietnam fell to the communist regime. Hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese families were displaced, many of whom were welcomed to the United States as refugees. The resolution highlights the countless ways in which the Vietnamese community has enriched our country, especially in Little Saigon in Orange County, California, home to the largest Vietnamese diaspora in the world. Tran's resolution also recognizes the U.S. government's humanitarian efforts, such as Operations Frequent Wind, Babylift, New Life, and New Arrivals, which rescued tens of thousands of refugees, and celebrates a shared commitment by the Vietnamese community and U.S. government to advocate for human rights and democracy in Vietnam.
