Two east-central Georgia bridges scheduled to close

SR 220 at Soap Creek

Tennille, Ga. - The Georgia Department of Transportation and its construction contractors have scheduled two bridge closures in east-central Georgia.

SR 220 detour

In Lincoln County, State Route 220 is scheduled to close at Soap Creek (part of Clarks Hill Lake) on Monday, July 13. E.R. Snell Contractor, Inc. has been awarded a $18.68 million project to replace the existing substandard bridge, built in 1952, at this location. A new bridge will be built to modern design standards. The new structure will be approximately 15 feet taller to provide more than 20 feet of vertical clearance over full pool, allowing for larger boat access under the new bridge.

The road is expected to close for 18 months. An off-site detour will be implemented to allow the contractor to construct the bridge on the existing alignment and complete construction faster.

Detour: SR 47 to SR 43 Connector/Old Petersburg Road, SR 43 Connector to US 378/SR 43, US 378/SR 43 to SR 220

The boat ramp near the bridge will be closed during construction. Marine traffic may continue to use Soap Creek while construction takes place. Boaters are advised to use caution when navigating the work zone. Slow down and watch for workers.

Airport Road detour

In Dodge County, Airport Road is scheduled to close at Alligator Creek on Monday, July 13. Griffin Grading & Concrete, LLC has been awarded a $1.85 million project to replace the existing bridge at this location, about 8 miles northeast of Eastman. The new bridge will be built in place of the existing bridge to minimize right-of-way and environmental impacts.

The road is expected to close for five months. An offsite detour will be implemented.

Detour: Horne Road to Fountain Road, Fountain Road to SR 126, SR 126 to Pat Mullis Road, Pat Mullis Road to Old Eastman Road
