Intermittent lane closures as traffic shifts on Jefferson Road improvement project

Motorists can expect intermittent lane closures the evening of Monday, July 14, 2025, and into the morning hours of Tuesday, July 15, 2025, as Kokosing Construction Company opens the new bridge over the Kanawha Turnpike on Jefferson Road to two-way traffic. Kokosing will also open parts of the new Jefferson Road roundabout and close the CSX Railroad crossing at Jefferson Road and Kanawha Turnpike. The work is part of an approximately $47 million project to widen Jefferson Road to five lanes between Corridor G and US 60 in South Charleston that also includes eliminating the old CSX rail crossing by building the new bridge and roundabout. The new bridge was opened to northbound traffic on Thursday, May 22, 2025. The bridge will now carry one lane of traffic both north and south as contractors complete the final phase of construction and continue to work on the roundabout and connections to local communities. The new intersections have been designed to eliminate left-hand turns that caused congestion on the old road alignment. Signs will be in place to direct drivers where to go to get to their destinations via the new road alignment, but Kokosing suggests motorists seek alternate routes while lanes are shifted on Monday and Tuesday. For more information, including an animated video of how the new roundabout will work, visit the project website at https://jeffersonroadwv.com.
