Sophia Antipolis, 16 December 2025: The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) warmly welcomes the adoption of the Safe Hearts Plan, a landmark step towards tackling Europe's leading cause of death. This achievement marks the culmination of a four-year effort by the ESC and the European Alliance for Cardiovascular Health (EACH) to help the European Commission to develop a dedicated plan for Europe's most important killer. Today we celebrate this important achievement.
Cardiovascular disease is responsible for one in three deaths across the EU and affects 62 million people. This plan sets a clear path forward, with ambitious measures that will save lives and improve quality of care across Europe.
We are particularly encouraged by:
This plan is not the end - it is the beginning of our efforts to put cardiovascular care and research in Europe in the pole position. The ESC stands ready to work with policymakers, healthcare professionals, National Cardiac Societies and patient communities to turn these commitments into reality. Together, we can build a healthier, more resilient Europe, where every citizen has access to high-quality cardiovascular care.
