Hoboken under a State of Emergency; Icy conditions expected to worsen

The City's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has issued a State of Emergency and travel advisory which strongly advises against all non-essential travel during the storm. Additionally, a National Weather Service (NWS) Winter Storm Warning remains in effect through 1 p.m. tomorrow.

The storm has already brought significant snowfall and icy conditions to the city, and visibility remains low due to falling and blowing snow and ice. Hoboken's OEM encourages all residents to avoid travel as road conditions could become more dangerous. Staying off roads will keep you safe, allow public works teams to clear snow more quickly, and keep roadways clear for emergency services. If you must go outside for essential services, please exercise extreme caution. Do not walk in the street; use sidewalks only.

Heavy and thick ice can damage power lines and cause power outages. Please report power outages and downed wires to PSEG at https://nj.myaccount.pseg.com/myservicepublic/outagepublic, texting OUT to 4PSEG (47734), or call 1-800-436-PSEG (7734).

If you see downed utility lines or trees, call the Hoboken Fire Department dispatch number at 201-420-2004. Do not approach downed power lines.

Cancellations & closures

Municipal Offices will be closed tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 26.

The Hoboken Public School District has announced that school is cancelled for tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 26.

Street cleaning has been suspended tomorrow, Monday, Jan. 26.

Metered parking will not be enforced tomorrow. However, the City will continue to enforce safety-related parking regulations, including illegal parking, blocking crosswalks, and double parking. Loading zone regulations will also be enforced on Monday to ensure businesses and residents can continue to receive deliveries.

The City's Division of Recreation has cancelled all recreation programs scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 25 and Monday, Jan. 26.

The Hoboken Public Library has announced it will be closed on Sunday, Jan. 25, and Monday, Jan. 26.

Citi Bike bike share service is temporarily suspended due to the storm. Riders are encouraged to check the Citi Bike and Lyft apps for service updates.

Keep Sidewalks & Curb Ramps Clear

While property owners and occupants have six (6) hours after the completion of a storm to remove snow and ice from sidewalks adjacent to their property, along with adjoining curb ramps or curb cuts, residents are encouraged to get ahead of shoveling efforts, as snow and ice are expected to get heavier as the storm continues.

The Hoboken Fire Department is also asking residents with hydrants near their homes to clear three feet of snow from around, and a path to the hydrant. This will allow firefighters quick access during emergencies, instead of clearing snow.

Please hydrate and use caution when shoveling, as well as assist elderly or disabled neighbors with clearing snow from their properties. It is illegal to shovel snow back onto streets or onto fire hydrants.

The City performs proactive inspections and relies on citizen complaints to help identify property owners that are not meeting sidewalk safety requirements. While most property owners comply with the safety regulations, the City will issue fines to those who do not keep sidewalks clear.

To report an un-shoveled sidewalk, please email [email protected].

Emergency Snow Routes in effect

Snow emergency routes are being enforced, and towing has begun. This is necessary to allow emergency vehicles to move throughout Hoboken for the safety and welfare of all residents.

Emergency snow routes in Hoboken are labeled with street signs that read "No Parking When Road Is Snow Covered." A map of emergency snow routes is available on the City's website: www.hobokennj.gov/snow and are listed below.

  • Fourth Street - South Side - River St. to Jackson St.
  • Willow Avenue West Side - Observer Hwy. to 11th St. (County Road)
  • Third Street - North Side - Jackson St. to River St.
  • Ninth Street - North Side - Jackson St. to Castle Point Ter.
  • Fifth Street- South Side - Clinton St. to River St.
  • Washington Street (Both Sides)
  • Observer Highway - (Both Sides) Henderson St. to Hudson St. (County Road)
  • 13th Street - North Side - Washington St. to Madison St.
  • 13th Street - South Side - Washington St. to Hudson St.

Snow emergency routes will remain in place until the Office of Emergency Management declares them clear and releases them for parking. This will not occur until after snowfall stops, the streets are plowed sufficiently, and to the extent that parking will not interfere with the flow of traffic for emergency operations.

As a reminder, Temporary No-Parking signs are in effect on the east side of Grand Street between Third and Eighth Streets. This will allow plows to clear snow toward the curbline for removal. If snow is not cleared, it can prevent vehicles from parking within the parking lane, causing them to encroach into the travel lane and block the flow of traffic, including emergency vehicles. Once the snow is cleared and signs are removed by the Hoboken Parking Utility, parking will be allowed.

Municipal Garages Filled

All municipal parking garages have been filled at this time. As a reminder, discount parking is currently scheduled to end at 4 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26. To avoid delays, please plan to exit early, as lines can form when the discounted rate ends.
