'We are taking maximum efforts to modernize ourdefence forces'- says Defence Secretary

"We are taking maximum efforts to modernize our defence forces with latest technologies and equipment".

"In addition, we ensure that our defence forces will be employed exclusively for their primary role of military assignments in defending our country. We expect to undertake a review of the armed force structure to ensure optimal utilization of resources and to enhance the operational efficiency by implementing targeted recruitment and focusing on quality over quantity in personnel selection", said Defence Secretary Air Vice Marshal Sampath Thuyacontha (Retd) while addressing at the Navy Passing Out Parade (POP), as the Chief Guest, at the 'Naval and Maritime Academy' (NMA) in Trincomalee on Saturday evening (Dec 28).

Chairperson of the MOD Seva Vanitha unit Dr (Mrs.) Ruvini Rasika Perera was also present at the occasion.

Speaking further the Defence Secretary paying tribute to the war heroes said that the war heroes deserve our honour and respect for today, tomorrow and always for the supreme sacrifices that they have made to give us a better future.

Arriving at the NMA, the Navy's highest seat of training and higher learning, situated in the eastern port city of Trincomalee, the Defence Secretary was received by Navy Commander Vice Admiral Priyantha Perera and Commandant of the NMA Commodore R Joseph.

Subsequently, he was accorded a ceremonial Guard of Honour in keeping with naval traditions. The night Passing Out Parade saw the commissioning of 16 cadets of 38th & 39th General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) Intakes and 13 Service Entry candidates of 1/2023 Service Entry Intake.

Defence Secretary presented awards to several officers for their exceptional performance during training.

Religious dignitaries including Ven. Maha Sanga, senior state officials, Navy Chief of Staff, Commander of the Eastern Naval Area, Defence Advisors of foreign embassies, senior military and police officers, distinguished invitees and relatives of the passing out officers were also present at the occasion.
