BECKLEY, W.Va. - Interventional gastroenterologist Dr. S. Momin Shah-Khan recently received Beckley ARH Hospital's inaugural ROSE (Recognition of Service Excellence) Award.
The honor is designed to recognize exceptional providers whose performance, leadership and service reflect the highest standards of care across the ARH system.
Shah-Khan was nominated for the award based on the care he provided to a patient who was referred to him for an endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) - a service that was not offered in the patient's home community.
According to the nomination, Shah-Khan went above and beyond more than once, not only through the procedure he performed, but also by "advocating for appropriate lab work completion to ensure the patient received appropriate care."
Beckley ARH CEO Todd Howell said that was just one example of the care Shah-Khan provides each day.
"Dr. Shah-Khan exemplifies the mission, vision and values of ARH through the compassion he shows his patients as well as his willingness to collaborate with other providers and members of our medical team," he said. "His dedication helps ensure the best outcome for his patients and we are both proud and fortunate to have him as a valued member of our staff."
Though Shah-Khan said he was grateful for the recognition, he said every accomplishment is made possible through teamwork.
"It's always nice to feel appreciated and recognized for what you do," he said. "But medicine is a team effort, and we have a great team here at Beckley ARH. From our endoscopy staff to our nurses and clinic staff, we all care about our patients, and we work well together as a team to truly help people."
The Beckley native said the award is even more special because it's based on work he's providing in his hometown.
"I always wanted to come home and give back to my community so patients wouldn't have to go far for advanced GI care," he said. "So, more than any awards or individual recognition, being here, in the community I love, working with other people who are just as invested in the patients' health and well-being, is what it's about."

About Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH)
Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) traces its roots back to 1955, when the United Mine Workers of America opened the Miners Memorial Hospital system - a network of 10 hospitals dedicated to providing care throughout the coalfields of eastern Kentucky and southern West Virginia. Seventy years later, ARH has grown into a 14-hospital not-for-profit health system that serves more than 500,000 residents of central Appalachia each year. ARH hospitals in Barbourville, Harlan, Hazard, Hyden, Martin, McDowell, Middlesboro, Paintsville, Prestonsburg, West Liberty, Whitesburg, and South Williamson in Kentucky, and Beckley and Hinton in West Virginia, ensure that residents, tucked away in even the most remote areas, can access the highest quality of care without traveling hours from home. ARH's hospitals, clinics, multi-specialty physician practices, home health agencies, home medical equipment stores, retail pharmacies, and medical spas boast more than 6,700 employees with a network of more than 1,300 providers, making it the single largest employer in southeastern Kentucky and the third-largest private employer in southern West Virginia.
