Undersecretary Teresa Mercado Pérez Visits Brussels to Co-Chair 11th Mexico-Belgium Political Consultation Mechanism

Undersecretary for Foreign Affairs Ambassador María Teresa Mercado Pérez, accompanied by Mexico's Ambassador to Belgium, Esteban Moctezuma Barragán, traveled to Brussels to co-chair the 11th Mexico-Belgium Political Consultation Mechanism together with Birgit Stevens, Director General for Bilateral Affairs at Belgium's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting will help strengthen political dialogue and advance cooperation in various areas of mutual interest.

At the meeting held yesterday, the two officials reaffirmed the excellent state of the bilateral relationship, particularly in recent years, and their commitment to deepening cooperation in strategic sectors where Belgium is a global leader, including health and biopharmaceuticals, semiconductors, scientific and technological innovation, port logistics, and clean energy.

The two sides discussed strategies to strengthen bilateral collaboration on academic cooperation and security.

They emphasized the importance of maintaining the momentum of the political dialogue, as reflected in reciprocal high-level visits in recent months, including that of Belgium's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maxime Prévot, in November 2025, and Secretary Roberto Velasco's visit to Brussels in April of this year.

The two sides reviewed bilateral trade and investment, as well as the opportunities created by the signing of the Modernized Global Agreement between Mexico and the European Union, which strengthens political dialogue, the economic relationship, and cooperation, particularly in strategic sectors of the Plan México initiative aimed at driving the country's development. The Mexican delegation expressed its hope that Belgium would support the agreement's prompt ratification.

The Mexican delegation also highlighted the European Commission's commitment to mobilize five billion euros for Mexico under the Global Gateway Initiative, an effort in which Belgium could play a significant role, as demonstrated by the collaboration between the ports of Antwerp and Guaymas to advance port decarbonization, sustainable logistics, and infrastructure modernization.

In addition, they exchanged views on issues on the international agenda, including the current geopolitical context, the defense of multilateralism, and cooperation within the United Nations and other international forums. Both sides reiterated their commitment to international law and the peaceful settlement of disputes.

They likewise agreed to continue close political dialogue and to follow up on the agreements reached to strengthen and deepen the bilateral relationship for the benefit of both peoples.
