What would you learn about leadership if you traded your office for a mop or spent a shift stocking shelves? For many executives, the view from the top is clear, but the reality on the front lines can often feel worlds away.
This distance between leadership and the "everyday" work creates more than just a quiet office-it creates a divide. When employees feel managed rather than led, organizations pay the price through rigid hierarchies, poor engagement and high turnover.
Northeast Iowa Community College (NICC) Business and Community Solutions is inviting local leaders to bridge that gap at the 2026 Business Summit, "The Cost of Culture." On Wednesday, May 20 from 9 am - 11 am, the Peosta Campus will host a conversation dedicated to humanizing leadership and strengthening the heartbeat of our local workforce.
"When we invest in leadership development and organizational culture, we're investing in the long-term success of our businesses and communities," says NICC Business & Community Solutions Program Developer Bailey Kloft. "This summit is designed to deliver real value-not just inspiration, but practical tools that make a measurable difference. One of the most powerful outcomes of this summit is connection. When leaders from across industries come together to learn and share experiences, it elevates the entire business community."
The summit features Nora Burns, known nationally as The Undercover Employeeâ„¢. A former Fortune 200 executive, Burns chose to step away from the boardroom to work on the front lines of major brands. Through her research-which included more than 250 undercover job interviews-she discovered that the most successful cultures aren't built on titles, but on how leaders show up for their community.
Attendees will explore the "ECHO" of leadership-Experience, Communication, Humanization and Own It. These four attributes serve as a guide for any leader looking to eliminate "Us vs. Them" silos and create an environment where high-quality talent wants to stay.
"It doesn't matter what the sign on the break room wall says; what matters is how you show up in the day-to-day experience," Burns shares.
At NICC, we believe we are a guide for individuals and businesses who may not know which step to take next. By bringing insights like these to our partners, we aim to move beyond "jargon" and toward actionable strategies that make our region's businesses more resilient.
Early bird registration is open now through April 1 for $129. As a special bonus, early registrants gain access to an exclusive webinar on April 7, exploring how AI is currently reshaping the hiring "arms race" between candidates and employers.
