WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) is demanding that the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) immediately ban the use of four toxic chemicals scientifically linked to cancer when used in food and food production. In a letter sent to FDA Commissioner Dr. Martin Makary, Senator Booker urged the approval of a petition that would "amend food and color additive regulations to remove four solvents: benzene, ethylene dichloride, methylene chloride, and trichloroethylene (TCE) as food ingredients or as substances used in the production of food."
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have already identified these chemicals as hazardous and likely carcinogenic.
"I request that the FDA expeditiously rule on this petition, which is backed by peer-reviewed science and supports the growing national demand, led by concerned mothers, for safety in food ingredients," wrote Senator Booker.
