MEDIA RELEASE: Celebrate Safe this Graduation Season!

MEDIA RELEASE: Celebrate Safe this Graduation Season!

Last Updated: 6/10/2025

Graduation season is a time of pride, joy, and celebration for students and families alike. As high school
seniors prepare to mark this important milestone, Tioga County Advocacy, Support, and Prevention (ASAP) is reminding parents, students, and community members of the importance of celebrating safely-and legally.

While graduation is a time to honor achievement, it can also bring increased risk for underage drinking,
impaired driving, and preventable tragedies. Tioga County ASAP urges families to plan alcohol and substance
free events and to talk openly with teens about making safe, responsible choices.

Some tips for parents during graduation season:

  • Talk early and often: Parents and guardians are the #1 influence on teen behavior. Clear conversations
about expectations and risks can make a lasting difference.
  • Plan alcohol-free celebrations: Host supervised, alcohol-free parties that focus on fun, not substances.
  • Know the law: Supplying alcohol and cannabis to minors-even in your own home-is illegal and can
    result in serious legal consequences.
  • Create a safety plan: Encourage teens to call a trusted adult for help if they ever feel unsafe or
    pressured.
  • Watch for warning signs: Changes in behavior, secrecy, or new social circles may signal that a teen is
struggling or engaging in risky behavior.

Let's make this graduation season one to remember-for all the right reasons. Be a Parent, Not a Bartender!
