TAHLEQUAH, Okla. - Cherokee Nation Foundation announced $540,300 in scholarships awarded to students for the upcoming academic year Thursday, increasing access to higher education for Cherokee families.
"Education investments lead to generational dividends for Cherokee families, helping our communities thrive now and in the future," said Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chuck Hoskin Jr. "The seeds we sow in education today determine the quality of Cherokee entrepreneurs, lawyers, health care providers and artists who will lead us tomorrow.
"Scholarships unlock a path to financial independence for the student, but they also help Cherokee families thrive by easing the financial demand of education. I applaud our scholarship recipients and their hard work to earn this opportunity for their families."
CNF offers three types of scholarships: private, tribal and institutionally based. The competitive awards are separate from the funds available through the tribe's college resource center. All applications are evaluated on academic achievement, community and cultural involvement and intentions to serve the Cherokee community.
"Our mission is to empower Cherokee students to reach their full potential at every education level," said Janice Randall, CNF executive director. "College preparation and scholarship help ensure the best possible educational outcomes to enrich the Cherokee community for years to come."
All awards are given to applicants following a process that evaluates academic performance as well as community and cultural involvement.
