Washington County offers free, unbiased Medicare support during upcoming open enrollment

Medicare open enrollment takes place every year from October 15 through December 7. Washington County Disability, Aging and Veteran Services (DAVS) is offering one-on-one assistance at locations throughout the county to help people understand the Medicare program and their plan options.

Highly trained volunteers with the Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA) program provide free, unbiased information and support to help individuals choose and, in some cases, apply for the right plan for their needs.

"Based on the number of calls we've been receiving since August, we know there are a lot of people in our community looking for help this year," said Bobbie Hoke, program coordinator with DAVS. "Medicare is complicated, and 2027 will see some significant Medicare Advantage plan changes. We are here to help folks navigate this."

Sessions are available during the open enrollment period except on November 11, 26 or 27.

The following locations require appointments by calling 503-846-3094. Callers should leave a brief message with their name, phone number and city of residence, and indicate if they need help in a language other than English.

• DAVS office, 5240 NE Elam Young Pkwy., Suite 300, Mon-Thurs, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
• Elsie Stuhr Center, 5550 SW Hall Blvd., Thurs. 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
• Juanita Pohl Center, 8513 SW Tualatin Rd., Fri. 12:30-3:30 p.m.
• Marjorie Stewart Senior Community Center, 21907 SW Sherwood Blvd., Weds. 12-3 p.m.
• Scappoose Senior Center, 33342 SW Meadow Dr., Thurs. Oct. 15, Oct. 29, Nov. 12, Dec. 3, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
• Tigard Senior Center, 8815 SW Omara St. Thurs. Oct. 22, Oct. 29, Nov. 12, Nov 19 and Weds. Nov. 25 and Dec. 2, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

The following locations are walk-in only. Individuals will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis and should expect a wait.

• DAVS office, 5240 NE Elam Young Pkwy., Suite 300, Hillsboro, Fridays, 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
• Hillsboro Senior Center, 750 SE 8th Ave. Wednesdays, 12-2 p.m.

Community members can also enroll in a Medicare 101 class. These are offered virtually and in-person across the state, with several in Washington County and the greater Portland Metro region. The Oregon State SHIBA network maintains a current list on its classes web page.
