Rep. Workman to Serve on Newly Created Joint Data Center Committee

State Representative Heidi Workman (R-Rootstown) today announced she has been tasked to serve on the newly formed Joint Data Center Committee, a bipartisan legislative panel created to examine the economic, environmental, energy, and security impacts of data center development across Ohio. The committee will engage with stakeholders, industry experts, and Ohio communities to better understand how the rapid expansion of data centers is affecting regions throughout the state.

Speaker of the Ohio House Matt Huffman (R-Lima) tasked the following members from the House, including Rep. Workman, to serve on the Committee:

  • House Co-Chair: State Rep. Adam Holmes
  • State Representative Thad Claggett (R-Licking County)
  • State Rep. Heidi Workman (R-Rootstown)
  • State Rep. Chris Glassburn (D-North Olmsted)

"Ohio continues to be a leader in economic development and innovation, and the growth of data centers across our state presents significant opportunities for investment, job creation, and technological advancement," said Rep. Workman. "At the same time, it is important that we carefully consider the concerns being raised by local communities regarding energy demand, land use, infrastructure, water resources, cybersecurity, and quality of life. I look forward to working with stakeholders and residents alike to ensure Ohio can support responsible growth while protecting the interests of the communities impacted by these developments."

The first meeting of the committee is expected to be held May 27th.

The committee will help to serve as a response to the rapid growth of data centers in Ohio and the many unanswered questions regarding their development. Key concerns include energy demand, the use of agricultural land, noise pollution, water use and disposal, and national security, among other important issues. According to some estimates, roughly 200 data centers are operating in Ohio, and additional facilities are being proposed.
