On August 11, 2025, San Mateo County Parks will begin a fuel reduction project to treat a 17-acre site along Junipero Serra Park's boundary with private residences in San Bruno. By removing dead trees and thinning low growing vegetation, the risk of wildfire spread will be reduced and community safety enhanced. This project is funded through the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) Hazard Mitigation Assistance Grant Program.
The first phase of the project will involve mechanical and manual equipment to remove trees that have fallen or are dead and live trees 10 inches in diameter or smaller. Low-hanging tree limbs will be trimmed. To reduce the likelihood of ground cover fire from spreading to tree canopy, overgrown brush and plants growing directly under trees will be thinned or removed. This work is expected to continue through September.
Park visitors and nearby residents may hear the use of equipment, including masticators, chippers and chainsaws. Work will only occur Monday through Friday, beginning no earlier than 8 a.m. in areas along park boundaries and private property.
Crews will return to the project area next spring to assess conditions and determine if there is need for retreatment to address regrowth.
