The City will mark the opening of a major component of the Flood Control System on Monday, August 11 at 10 a.m. in Czech Village.
A ribbon cutting will be held Monday outside of the National Czech & Slovak Museum and Library, 1400 Inspiration Place SW. The event will recognize the completion of a new stormwater pump station; detention basin; reinforced concrete floodwall from 12th to 16th Avenue SW; and flood gate across 16th Avenue SW.
The event begins at 10 a.m. City Manager Jeff Pomeranz, Mayor Tiffany O'Donnell, and City Council Member Tyler Olson will give remarks ahead of the ribbon cutting.
The Flood Control System is designed to convey the same water volume as the 2008 flood, reducing flood risk through the heart of Cedar Rapids on both the west and east sides of the river. The system incorporates a combination of floodwalls, levees, and gates, and feature aesthetic elements that reflect the community's culture, history, and vision.
