Expanded heart, cancer care brings advanced treatment closer to home in Bolingbrook

BOLINGBROOK, Ill. - Patients in Bolingbrook and surrounding communities have greater access to advanced cardiovascular and cancer care with the opening of two new catheterization (cath) labs at UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Bolingbrook.

Health system, hospital and community leaders celebrated the expansion on Sept. 30 with a ribbon cutting ceremony in the $21.6 million, 15,000-square-foot addition at 500 Remington Blvd.

"This is an important day for our hospital, our team members, our physicians and most importantly, the patients and families we serve, who deserve access to advanced, whole-person care close to home," said Eunmee Shim, president and CEO of UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Bolingbrook.

"This is the latest example of how we're delivering on our plan to meet the health needs of our communities now and in the years ahead," said Monica Reed, MD, president and CEO of UChicago Medicine AdventHealth. "Across cardiovascular care, cancer care, neurosciences, orthopedics, behavioral health and many other areas, we're welcoming more specialists, expanding services and enhancing technology to ensure our patients have world-class care for every aspect of their healthcare journey."

The new cath labs use minimally invasive, image-guided procedures to diagnose, treat and prevent serious heart problems and advanced interventional radiology procedures for cancer patients, including image-guided biopsies and minimally invasive treatments.

"Our physicians and care teams have additional capacity, advanced technology and a more effective environment in which to diagnose and treat patients," said Arnon Rubin, MD, president of the medical staff at UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Bolingbrook. "The impact will be felt in emergency care, scheduled procedures and ongoing treatment for patients with complex needs."

The completion of the project also highlights UChicago Medicine AdventHealth's partnership with local leaders, fire and police departments, and other organizations working to strengthen community well-being.

"This $21.6 million investment is an important moment for Bolingbrook providing our community access to quality healthcare," Bolingbrook Mayor Mary Alexander-Basta said. "Congratulations to the physicians, clinical teams and leadership on this achievement, and thank you to the many community partners, builders, first responders and elected officials whose support helped bring this project with state-of-the-art cardiac services to completion."

The opening of the cath labs follows the addition of seven cardiologists to the UChicago Medicine AdventHealth Heart and Vascular care team over the last year.

The team now has nearly 20 physicians who see patients at offices in Bolingbrook, Chicago, Hinsdale, La Grange, Plainfield and Woodridge.

The system's plan of increasing access to comprehensive cardiovascular care includes a renovation and technology upgrade of the cardiac cath lab at UChicago Medicine AdventHealth La Grange in 2027.
