Keeping Jobs in the Pittsburgh Area

The economic future of Pittsburgh and our Commonwealth should not be held back by the political rhetoric we have seen far too often by some elected officials. By supporting anti-energy policies, such as the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, and needlessly working to block a negotiated deal by U.S. Steel, policymakers have failed to see the potential of strengthening the steel and energy industries here in Pennsylvania. Expanding natural gas and steel production in a responsible manner brings immediate and long-term benefits to our community, including adding or saving thousands of jobs.
Opposition to these industries undermines the entire economic ecosystem. Small businesses and local governments, which rely on the region's economic growth, cannot afford to operate without energy's economic contributions.
I recently introduced House Resolution 562 urging the president to approve the deal U.S. Steel negotiated to stay headquartered in Pittsburgh. My resolution contains information on the economic benefits of U.S. Steel's presence in the Commonwealth, as well as information about the strong alliance that the U.S. has with Japan. Approving this sale will bring billions in regional economic impact, thousands of family-sustaining jobs, and millions in state and local tax revenue to Pittsburgh and our Commonwealth.
I'm in favor of making any strong economic deal that would inject much-needed capital into the steel industry, grow our economy, and keep union and non-union jobs in Pittsburgh. This effort to ensure the company remains headquartered in Pittsburgh would greatly benefit our region and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a whole.
Pittsburgh should once again become the focal point of America's steel production. Our region is also equipped with the necessary assets in delivering clean and affordable energy. It is time to restore the manufacturing and energy-producing stronghold our great region once was.
