MIKTA Special Communiqué on the Summit of the Future

We are living in an era defined by crisis and opportunity, where unprecedented challenges coexist with new possibilities. The international community stands at a crossroads and our choices today will shape the world for generations to come. The United Nations Summit of the Future constitutes a decisive moment for the international community rebuild trust to renew its commitment to multilateralism, peace and security, sustainable development, human rights, gender equality, global cooperation and shared prosperity and to safeguard the best interests of present and future generations.

With this understanding we, the Foreign Ministers of Australia, Indonesia, Republic of Korea, Mexico and Türkiye, gathered for the 26th MIKTA Foreign Ministers Meeting, wholeheartedly welcomed the convening of the Summit of the Future in New York, and the adoption of the Pact for the Future, and its two annexes, the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations.

The Summit of the Future was a timely and crucial platform to critically revitalize the multilateral architecture and commit to concrete actions to address the pressing global issues that transcend national borders, that no country may solve in isolation. From armed conflicts, the climate crisis, poverty, hunger and growing inequality, to accelerated technological change and the erosion of public trust in global institutions, the challenges we face require innovative and transformative approaches and solutions and coordinated action. The United Nations is uniquely positioned to bring together all states, as well as all stakeholders- including regional organizations, parliamentarians, local governments, civil society and private sector organizations, academia, International Financial Institutions and the citizens around the world-to forge a common vision for our shared future.

Adopting the Pact for the Future

The Pact for the Future is an essential framework that embodies our collective aspirations for a world that is safe, peaceful, just, equal, inclusive, sustainable, equitable, resilient, and prosperous. It emphasizes our determination to revitalize the multilateral system, and to enable it to respond effectively to current and emerging challenges.

The Pact calls for a recommitment to the principles and objectives of the United Nations Charter and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; renews the foundational promise to protect succeeding generations from the scourge of war; recommit to respect for international law and reinforces the importance of international cooperation to accelerate progress for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the achievement of its Sustainable Development Goals, particularly for developing countries.

This Pact for the Future is in and of itself the outcome of a renewed commitment to diplomacy and multilateralism. We therefore express our support to the Pact for the Future, and our decision to put words into action to build a world that is prosperous, peaceful and secure, where no one is left behind, and ensure that the benefits of the new and emerging technologies are shared equitably among and within countries.

By adopting the Global Digital Compact, we commit, individually and collectively, to cooperate to harness the potential and address the risks and challenges of digital technologies. The Compact promotes a digital environment that is inclusive, open, safe and secure, and which fully respects, protects and promotes human rights.

Finally, by adopting the Declaration on Future Generations we commit to safeguard the needs and interests of present and future generations, by leveraging science and evidence-based decision-making, and enhancing cooperation with stakeholders.

The MIKTA countries reaffirm our commitment to work with all member states and stakeholders to build a reinforced global governance fit for purpose in the 21st Century, with the United Nations at its core. We encourage all countries and stakeholders to join in the collective effort charted in the Pact for the Future, the Global Digital Compact and the Declaration on Future Generations and ensure its effective implementation.

Let us seize this moment to reaffirm our commitment to effective, inclusive and impactful multilateralism, solidarity, and international cooperation to achieve a world in which no one is left behind.
